It wasn’t the easiest matter, finding somewhere to be alone in an unfamiliar building in the middle of downtown. Francesca was smart enough to know that she couldn’t afford to get totally lost; they’d be heading off to catch their flight soon, but she just needed some space to breathe.

She should’ve expected the confessional to go the way it did. Charlie even said that they’d ask probing questions just to amp up the drama. But just like when she’d tried to prepare herself for the photo shoot in their first challenge, all the internal pep talks in the world couldn’t keep Francesca from freezing up.

At the end of the hall leading away from the lounge was a set of double doors, made of metal and posted with a “Do Not Block” sign. Francesca opened one a few inches and peeked out. A loading dock.

She slipped through the doors and onto the concrete steps that led down from the building. There were no trucks here now. It was just an empty, echoey area between one wing of the building and a side street. She sat down on the steps and raked her hands back through her long hair.

Only a few minutes had passed before Francesca heard the click and scrape of the door behind her as it opened. She turned around, ready to move out of the way, but every muscle in her body relaxed when she saw that it was Charlie. She scooted over to make room.

Charlie watched her with concern as she sat down beside her.

“Hamish was coming back from the restroom and he saw you go this way,” she told her, explaining how she managed to track Francesca down. “You didn’t look happy when you came out of the confessional. Are you okay?”

Francesca growled out a sigh. “Yes. You warned me, and I tried not to let them get to me. Guess I failed.”

“What’d they say?” Charlie asked softly, and then she added, “But you don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want to!”

A little smile crossed Francesca’s face. “Eh, it’s okay. They were giving me grief because my parents didn’t Skype in.” She curled her arms around her knees and picked pensively at the lacing of her sneakers. “I wouldn’t have expected them to anyway. But the director wouldn’t take that for an answer, and she kept trying to rile me up.”

“Did you get to talk to anyone at all?”

Francesca chewed on the inside of her cheek. Her stomach was still coiled up in knots and she didn’t want to make it any worse. Yeah, she hadn’t expected her parents to care. They were probably planning to boycott this season of The Makeover Challenge anyway, out of spite. But who else did she even have that the studio could’ve tried to reach? Mandi left a brief, kind of impersonal message for her, and other than that...

“I got a voice message from one of my friends,” she said in a low voice. “But it wasn’t much of anything.
